FACIAL AGEING & CONTOURING

Jowls & Loss of Jawline Definition

Understand what changes — and explore your options.

A softer jawline or early jowling can develop gradually as the skin and underlying facial structures change with age. At Nur Aesthetics Clinic, we look beyond the surface to understand whether skin laxity, changes in facial volume or a combination of factors is affecting your lower face. Our aim is to help you explore realistic, personalised non-surgical options — without promising a surgical-style lift.

What is this concern?

Jowls are areas of lower-face soft tissue that sit below or interrupt the jawline contour. They are common with ageing and are not necessarily caused by excess fat alone.

What causes it?

Skin laxity: collagen and elastin change over time, reducing the skin’s ability to retain a firm appearance.

Volume redistribution: changes in the fat compartments of the face can alter how the cheeks and lower face are supported.

Structural changes: gradual changes in bone and deeper facial tissues can affect the jawline silhouette.

Genetics and lifestyle: inherited anatomy, sun exposure, smoking and significant weight changes can influence when jowls become noticeable.

A person may have several of these factors at once. This is why treating every jowl with the same device or injection is unlikely to be appropriate.

Results, safety and limitations

Results vary by anatomy, age, degree of laxity and treatment selected. Energy-based treatments often produce gradual changes over weeks or months; filler-related changes follow a different timeline and carry injection-specific risks. Before-and-after photographs, where used, must be genuine, consented and accurately labelled.

Our Consultations

Your practitioner will assess your lower-face contours, skin quality, facial volume and relevant medical and treatment history. We will discuss the likely cause of your concern, the degree of improvement that may be realistic and whether a non-surgical option is worthwhile. If there is substantial excess skin or advanced descent, surgical advice may be more appropriate.

What may help?

Mild skin laxity: an energy-based skin-firming treatment may be worth discussing. Volume-related changes: assessment for facial support and whether filler is appropriate. Advanced jowling or significant excess skin: non-surgical options have limitations and surgical advice may be more suitable. There is no single treatment that reliably corrects every type of jowl.

  • BTL Exilis Ultra 360 — Face & Neck
  • Fractional RF Microneedling
  • Dermal Fillers — selected cases only

Can jowls be prevented?

Natural facial ageing cannot be stopped. Daily sun protection, consistent skincare, avoiding smoking and maintaining a stable weight may help support skin quality. Where jowls are already visible, the best approach depends on whether the main issue is mild laxity, facial volume change or substantial tissue descent.

Focused ultrasound may help improve the appearance of mild to moderate laxity in suitable clients. It does not remove excess skin or restore facial volume. Energy depth and facial fat distribution must be assessed carefully.

Non-invasive radiofrequency and ultrasound-based tissue heating may support gradual improvement in skin firmness and lower-face definition in selected clients. A course may be recommended following assessment.

Fractional RF Microneedling

A fractional RF microneedling course may be considered when changes in skin texture and firmness accompany early lower-face laxity. It does not replace deeper facial support or surgical lifting.

Dermal Fillers — selected cases only

Where changes in facial support or volume contribute to the appearance of jowls, carefully planned filler may be considered by an appropriately qualified practitioner. Adding filler directly into a heavy lower face is not always beneficial and can worsen the appearance in unsuitable cases.

Frequently asked questions

What causes jowls?

Jowls usually reflect a combination of changes in skin elasticity, underlying support and facial volume. Genetics, sun exposure and weight changes can contribute.

Can HIFU lift jowls?

HIFU may improve the appearance of mild to moderate lower-face laxity in suitable clients. It cannot replicate a surgical facelift and may be inappropriate where facial volume is already reduced.

Is Exilis better than HIFU for jowls?

Neither is automatically better. They deliver energy differently and suitability depends on skin thickness, laxity, facial volume, medical history and the desired outcome.

Can fractional RF microneedling help my jawline?

It may improve skin quality and some mild laxity, but it will not replace missing structural support or remove substantial excess skin.

Will dermal fillers fix jowls?

Sometimes strategically placed filler can improve facial balance when volume loss contributes to the concern. It may also make heaviness worse if used in unsuitable areas or quantities.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the chosen procedure and response. A practitioner will discuss a realistic plan rather than recommending repeated treatments automatically.

How quickly will I see a change?

Energy-based skin-firming results generally develop gradually over weeks to months. The timeline for injectables differs; no visible improvement is guaranteed.

Are non-surgical jowl treatments painful?

Treatment sensations vary. Energy-based procedures may cause warmth, tingling or discomfort; injectable procedures involve needles and carry different risks.

Can I treat jowls if I have had filler before?

You must disclose previous fillers, threads and energy-based treatments. Their location, type and timing can affect suitability and treatment planning.

Can treatment cause facial fat loss?

Unwanted contour or fat changes are recognised potential complications of some energy-based facial treatments. Careful patient selection and depth planning are essential.

What if I have severe jowls?

Significant tissue descent or excess skin may not respond sufficiently to non-surgical treatments. A surgical consultation may offer more realistic information.

How much does treatment cost?

Prices depend on the selected treatment. Please use the relevant live Fresha service page for current prices, duration and clinic availability.
